Helping at TOTAL

Every year we see families in a financial crisis who have been placed in a bad situation despite their best efforts to overcome obstacles. Typical types of assistance include:

  • Prevention of evictions/foreclosures
  • Preventing loss of utility services (electric/gas/water)
  • Providing heating assistance in the winter
  • Providing food
  • Providing clothing (at no cost)
  • Covering the costs of life-sustaining medications
  • Assistance with obtaining identification papers to start work or find social services assistance (birth certificate, social security card, and picture i.d.)
  • Traveler's Aid for Spartanburg County (stranded travelers)

Getting Help from T.O.T.A.L

Every person that comes to TOTAL must bring a state issued picture identification card and proof of Social Security Number. The only proof of SSN we accept is from the Social Security Administration, that is your SSN Card, a Medicaid card, an award letter of disability or SSI, or the verified printout of your SSN. We accept no other proof of SSN, only proof from the Social Security Administration. If you need help with a utility bill then we will need that bill, with a cut-off or past due notice. For Duke Energy Customers, the bill must be in your name (or spouse) and you must live at the address on the bill, this is a policy of Duke Energy. If you need help with rent, we need a statement from your landlord and it must identify you by name with your address, how much you are behind, and include the landlord's name, address and phone number. We have a form available if you want to make sure you get the correct information. For mortgages, we need proof you are behind and how much with the mortgage company address. A mortgage company will never talk to us on the phone, so getting help on a mortgage is more complicated. We are not able to help you if your mortgage has gone into foreclosure. If you need help with prescriptions we need either the refill bottle or a written prescription. The pharmacy we use will not fill prescriptions from out of state. Refills must be less than 60 days old. We can only help pay toward one thing. We do not pay for phone bills, cable TV bills, internet service, we won't pay for your credit cards or your taxes. We are not able to assist with any deposits, for utility deposits you can check about having someone act as a guarantor for the deposit but they must be a customer of that company and have an account in good standing. We cannot help you over the phone and we will not make house calls. You must come to our office to receive assistance.
